I’m all about my freebies. Β Maybe you remember all of the product samples I’ve scored, and blogged about in the past. Β You can get free stuff easily by requesting trials online, and they will be delivered to you by mail. Β When I’m not filling out forms like that, I’m in shops trying to get hook ups. Β In Starbucks this week they were sampling out pasteries. Β They weren’t on display yet. Β The stash was sitting off into the corner on the counter, with a Manager’s note saying “Sample these.” Β I politely asked an employee if I could have one of the items. Β There was all sorts of muffins, bars, and scones to pick from. Β On day one I took the pink cake filled lolly pops with sprinkles. Β I didn’t eat them in public.

I went back to the coffee shop for more samples the next day, just in case they were still available. Β Really, I just needed the WiFi to upload my previous video. Β I scored the squishy coffee cake that day, but didn’t stop there. Β I requested 3 honey packets too, since they don’t put those out at all Starbucks locations. Β I swiped a few raw sugar packets as well. Β Plus, I saw another sign saying I can request a free sample beverage using their coffee pods if I asked. Β When I mentioned it, the worker said they haven’t used that set up to brew complimentary cups of fresh java lately, even though the machine, and sample pods where still on the front counter. Β I didn’t have time for them to pretend to look for anΒ extensionΒ cord, so I took samples for later consumption.

I like to visit the health food store weekly, and my last trip was really worth it. Β They always have free tablets of Vitamin C to help yourself to, but there was more. Β I found packets of food-grade Diatomaceous Earth, Natural Calm magnesium mixes in three flavors, Barlean’s Greens, one DHA pill, and a bag of tea. Β TheseΒ individuallyΒ wrapped servings are perfect for my backpacking trips, and theΒ small emergency caches I like to build to prepare for tsunamis. Β If I can swoop up all of these freebies, than so can you. Β Ask for a nibble when you’re in the food court, or browsing the deli counter at the grocery store. Β It’s fun to see what you can get for asking. Β Happy hunting Survival Bros.

My buddies needed a lift, and Designated Driver for a fishing trip in Astoria, OR. Β I dropped them off at the East Mooring Basin. Β You’re suppose to pay to park there. Β They we’re on the water for around four hours before they limited out. Β The guys ended up with pounds and pounds of fresh fillets. Β One man kept the salmon eggs for future fishing bait. Β All of the fishermen had plans to either freeze, and smoke the meat shortly. Β It was interesting to see the Captain of the boat cut up Coho so efficiently, and discard the waste down properly down a slide. Β All he needed was a large fillet, and butcher’s knife made by Victorinox of Switzerland. Β I made sure to ask. Β He wasΒ sharpeningΒ the knifes every few fish. Β Also pictured is the rowdy seaΒ lions that live there on the docks. Β I saw one beast puke on another, and he didn’t flinch. Β More blogs coming!Β  Peace. Β victorinox butcher

Survival BrosΒ eats fresh slices of smoked fish on the Oregon Coast. Β Bell Buoy is one of our favorite places to dine, and support. Β Stop by their store when you’re in Seaside, OR. Β They can and smoke on site, right off of Highway 101. Β I bet I could eat pounds of this meat easy. Β It’s the perfect food for building muscle. Β I like to take a bag of salmon jerky hiking, but unless you have a cooler, it has to be consumed within a few hours of purchasing. Β Have you tried seafood like this? Β Listen to the locals when you’re on vacation. Β They know what’s best. Β Please subscribe on YouTube for more adventures. Β Thanks.

Former Marine Tactical Gypsy has anΒ exclusiveΒ Survival Bros blog and new elk jerky recipe for you. Β He hunts in Oregon withΒ seven other buddies, and no matter how much they kill, they split the meat evenly so nobody is left out. Β This season his hunting party terminated five bulls, producing around 225 pounds of meat each. Β He has used the animal for sausage, country fried steaks, and thick jerky strips. Β His favorite cut is the back strap, which runs on each side of the spine. Β It’s the most tender part, and is amazing in a stew of vegetables and spices. Β Simmer that on a low boil for awhile, and you have a man meal sure to satisfy. Β Tactical Gypsy also told me he likes to pan sear the meat first, to lock in the juice.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

To produce scrumptious elk jerky he cut slabs 1/4th of an inch thick, because they shrink. Β His recipe calls for six or seven pounds of flesh, so he ends up with big nuggets to feast on. Β Each hunk is approximately 4″ x 1″ wide. Β The marinade calls for 4 1/2 cups of soy sauce, with plenty of WorcestershireΒ depending on personal preference. Β Mix in 1 pound of brown sugar, then a 8 oz. bottle of hickory liquid smoke flavoring. Β Soak the elk in a bowl, or deep pan, and refrigerate for 12 hours.. Β After that, use a colander to run off the marinade. Β Next, lay out the strips on the dehydrator trays evenly, with bigger pieces going on the bottom. Β Sprinkle on coarse black pepper, turn the machine on high, and let her rip. Β Check back every few hours, and rotate the racks as needed. Β In 12 additional hours you’ll have a stash of jerky to devour, and give out to your friends. Β Tactical Gypsy, if you are reading this, please save me a nug or two. Β Survival Bros will have more blogs soon. Β Check back often. Β Likes, shares, and comments are appreciated.

I don’t always cook, but when I do, I make the dankest meals.Β  Last night I created an entirely gluten free meal, complete with local salmon from the Pacific Northwest.Β  First I unboxed the Annie’s Organic Gluten Free White Cheddar shellΒ mix.Β  Then I popped the top on the Skipanon Brand canned Chinook salmon.Β  I was impressed with the quality.Β  This was my first taste, and it was amazing straight out the can.Β  I mixed up the sauce like a boss, adding Tillamook butter, with a dash of spring water, no milk.Β  Then I spiced it up, with lemon pepper, and garlic salt.Β  Finally, I sprinkled Tillamook Mexican cheese on top of the mountain.Β  It was epic!Β  Check it out.

My bro known as “Tactical Gypsy” sent me these delicious pictures to blog about. He loves his elk. You can see all the spices and flavorings used to produce the glorious nuggets. Half of the loaves are spicy, half mild. Both varieties went well with pepper jack cheese, sharp cheddar, and even brie on crackers. Most of these will be stored in the freezer tonight, the others gifts.

Here’s the recipe:
8 LBS Elk burger
1/2 cup Morton’s Tender Quick. Mix well & let sit overnight in fridge.

Add… 1 1/2 TBSP Coarse pepper, 1 1/2 TBSP Garlic powder, 1 1/2 TBSP Crushed Red Pepper Flakes, 1 TBSP Mustard seed, 1 Tsp Cayenne pepper, 3 TBSP Liquid smoke…. MIX well!

Make 8 rolls/loaves. Put on broiler pan & bake 4Hrs @ 250* turning 1/4 turn every 1/2 Hr. Make sure internal heat gets to 150*.

Cool to room temp before wrapping and freezing.

If you haven’t been to the wonderous, massive, Tillamook Cheese Factory, drop the can of Cheez Whiz and go. I went for the free samples, and damn did I score. Plus, I got some epic cheese for later, and fresh jerky for my bug out bag. Pictured below was my lunch; three huge scoops in a chocolate waffle bowl with peanuts including: Grandma’s Cake batter ice cream, Marionberry Pie with chunks of crust, and Mint Chocolate Chip. I nearly died grubbing down on this, but it was heaven. I also snagged free samples of fudge.

20130519-113343.jpg
Tillamook County in Oregon has the best dairy in America. Nobody cares about heifers from Wisconsin. So with that in mind, I pillaged the village! Once at the famous Cheese Factory, I scurried to the self guided cheese sampling line. I grabbed a tooth pick, and began stabbing square chunks. So moist. Flavors dancing on the trampoline that is my tongue. There were 7 scrumptious varieties to try. I made the most out of it, and picked up two of the biggest nuggets in the dish each time. My mouth is bigger than most, so it’s only fair I take more. My favorite may be the smoked garlic and white cheddar cheese. You also have to try the legendary squeaky cheese sold only at the Tillamook Cheese Factory. It makes you sound like a hyper chipmunk when you chew it. I went through the line twice.

20130519-114409.jpg
From upstairs you can watch the cheese-makers create huge 40 pound blocks to package. It’s fascinating. The famous factory was packed with fanatics. It’s a must see in Oregon. Just down the road was a deal on smoked, natural, turkey and beef jerky. This is the perfect food to stockpile for an emergency. It will last awhile, and it’s a good source of protein. I picked up a stick, and a few bags. It was a great price, and tender. Mmmmm. Cheese, jerky, and ice cream. That’s a Survival Bros adventure.
