I dug this precious flattened penny out of my old golf bag recently. I must have been using it as a ball marker on the course back in high school.
With a group of students from Oregon, I visited New York, and the World Trade Center just 3 months before the attacks happened there in 2001. I remember not being able to see the top of the tower from my bus seat. It was incredible. The lobby was grand. We took a long elevator ride to the “Top of The World.” That’s what it says on my squished penny. I got it at the top. I recall the kind people that worked at the tower, and made our experience fun. I’m so glad I went.
I will never forget being on the Observation Deck that day, or the events that followed on September 11, 2001. R.I.P.
Thanks so much for sharing this, Cameron. What a rather eerie feeling it must given you to think of those people who were so kind and helpful, whatever their fate was…
I have one too. I was there for New Years 2000-2001. I bought my sisters magic brandy sniffer drinking glasses at the gift shop too.
When I saw the towers that day. All I thought of was the sweet little old lady at the food stand, and the little girl who just graduated and working in the WTC was just her first step, she wanted an office here someday. I think about how they were up there on that top floor.
My Wife and I just came across our flattened penny whilst looking for a broach for my daughter.
Coincidently we are travelling from Edinburgh to NY on Monday, as my daughter is getting married in NY on Wednesday.
